The Mathematical Institute of Charles University (MI ChU) was founded in 1956 by Eduard Čech, a distinguished Czech mathematician. As opposed to the beginnings of its existence, today's research and teaching activities of the institute are well balanced.

Currently, two academic sections work in the institute: the Division of analysis and geometry, and the Division of mathematical modelling. The groups hold traditional seminars, e.g. seminar in mathematical analysis, seminar in differential geometry, or Nečas seminar in continuum mechanics, and regularly organize international conferences, such as the Geometry and Physics winter school, Equadif, or Mathematics of mechanics of fluids.

The MI ChI have participated in prominent research projects, such as the Nečas Center for Mathematical Modeling and Eduard Čech Institute.

A dedicated subsection of the institute is in charge of the computer network in the entire Mathematical Section (the Karlin building), and of the operation of computer laboratories (60 computers).

The Mathematical Institute edits the prestigious mathematical periodical Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae (CMUC), founded by Eduard Čech in 1960 that ranks highly among  the scientific mathematical periodicals.
